The best kept secret in
Florida is the unspoiled Sebastian River area located in Indian River
County on the East Coast of Florida in what is known as the Treasure Coast
Area. The area gets its nickname, Treasure Coast, from the sunken Spanish
ships just offshore. Gold doubloons occasionally wash ashore here. The
famous Mel Fisher 's Treasure Museum is located here in Sebastian.
This Indian River County is on
US 1, between Melbourne and Ft Pierce, 86 miles of north of West Palm
Beach, 155 miles north of Miami, 156 miles east of Tampa. The county is
bounded to the north by Brevard County, home for the city of Melbourne, the
Cape and the shuttle launch, which you can see from our county, and to the
east by the Atlantic Ocean. Vero Beach is to the South end of the county.
Our ocean frontage is probably
the last open beach not dotted with condos with five very large state and
county parks already in place, including the Inlet State Park, which is
the only access to the ocean by boat for 40 miles either way. Between the
land strip or barrier islands and the mainland, we have beautiful Indian
River dotted with many small islands ready to explore.
Sebastian has grown
substantially from a small fishing village with most of the people making
their living either fishing, or harvesting clams, shrimps or oysters- all
of which still live in the rivers, to a now a thriving town.
Indian River County boasts
seven public and eleven private golf courses, giving golfers plenty of
variety and challenge. Bowling is also popular in the area, and the
recreation department sponsors softball and basketball leagues. Most
people don't think of hunting in Florida, but west of us, in the air boat
country, in addition to some very good bass fishing, there are deer, wild
boar, raccoon, etc.
This area offers world-class
surfing waves; Sebastian Inlet is a certified legend in surfing lore.
Scuba diving, sky-diving, sail surfing are among the popular sports for
the sport enthusiats.
Two major national wildlife
refuges, including the pride of Sebastian, Pelican Island. Created in 1903
by decree of President Theodore Roosevelt, it was the first in the nation,
and is the home of many species of birds.
Archie Carr Refuge is a major
nesting ground for several species of endangered sea turtles, including
the loggerhead and green sea.
Fellsmere, the oldest settled
area in the county, is the home of two of the most popular festivals in
the region- The Frog-Leg Festival in January and the Fellsmre Rodeo in
March.
